Session Abstract:

Expected-xTelehealth implementation is receiving increasing interest across all players in the healthcare industry. The post-ACA environment has introduced new strains on the capacity of physicians and hospital systems with the influx of newly insured. Telehealth offers the possibility of treating a variety of conditions without the need for office visits or extended hospitalization.

Telehealth implementation is costly and takes time to properly put in place. While most consider rural and medically-underserved areas as the key market for telehealth programs, other considerations should be accounted for in an appropriate telehealth needs assessment. Building a business case for telehealth implementation is necessary especially when attracting funding/investors.

This project scores individual counties within the US by the impact a telehealth offering would have. Data from Community Health Rankings (CHR), Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI), HCAHPS, Dartmouth Health Atlas, and Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are used to assess and score each county by both the need and opportunity for telehealth services.
