The Future of as-a-Service in IoT and at the Edge
Two dynamics at play today are the growth of the Edge/IoT, and, as-a-Service (aaS) consumption-based models. “Things” (the “T” in IoT) are becoming smarter, more efficacious, and better connected, resulting in a growing reliance on the edge – the “third place” which complements the on premises data center, and remote cloud. Current and future edge and IoT infrastructure deployments may benefit from aaS consumption models that are similar to the cloud. Bringing the cloud experience to the edge exposes several challenges not seen in the data center or cloud — such as remote systems management, limited connectivity, and cloud unfriendly edge apps. The panel will discuss these challenges, overcoming them as a prerequisite for Edge/IoT aaS, and offer expert perspectives on the future of Edge/IoT aaS.
Dr. Tom Bradicich is VP, Hewlett Packard Fellow. Beginning his career at IBM, Tom was an IBM Fellow, VP, Distinguished Engineer, and Server CTO. Prior to HP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Tom was an NI Fellow at National Instruments, an Operational Technologies (OT) company.
HP / Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE):
Tom is currently Vice President, Hewlett Packard Fellow, and Global Head of Edge and IoT Labs & CoE, at HPE. He and his team develop and commercialize advanced as-a-Service (aaS) software and technologies, focusing on cloud managed remote infrastructure, edge-as-a-service, and converged IT/Operational Technologies (OT). Tom incepted and directs the HPE Channel-to-Edge Institute partner program, and leads company-wide strategies and venture/M&A assessments.
Most recently Tom was HPE VP and General Manager, leading the global business unit, Servers and Edge Systems and Software, with P&L, worldwide sales, R&D, and customer experience ownership. In 2018, achieving revenue growth of over $250M, Tom’s business unit was the fastest growing in HPE. He directed the founding of HPE’s three global Innovation Labs for partner and customer collaborations, and led HPE’s first corporate IoT strategy. His sales teams were noted for exceeding sales quotas, and delivering first-of-a-kind products that greatly enhance customer business outcomes.
At HP, Tom was VP, Server Engineering, developing and launching servers, storage, and software.
Tom is named in CRN’s Top 100 Executives and Top 25 Disrupters in 2016, 2017, and 2019, inducted into the NC State University Alumni Hall of Fame, received the IBM Chairman’s Award, and elected to the IBM Academy of Technology. He currently serves on:

Throughout his career, Tom has led teams to develop, launch, and manage dozens of software and hardware products. And, the creation of several new product categories such as notebook computers, smartphones (IBM Simon™), Converged Systems (IBM BladeCenter™), Converged Edge Systems & Sofware (HPE Edgeline™), and OT and edge management software and platforms (HPE OTLink). Tom’s teams designed and launched the first 64 bit enterprise ARM server, the first x86 server with on-chip graphics, and IBM’s first prototype notebook computer.

Tom led the team to incept HPE’s first corporate IoT Strategy, and launched the GL™ and Edgeline™ hardware and software product lines as HPE’s first line of rugged systems expressly designed for the IoT and Intelligent Edge. And, the OTLink product line, entering HPE for the first time in the Operational Technology (OT) and Edge Platform software businesses. He serves as an advisor to his companies’ corporate legal teams on acquisitions, IP, and business contracts.
During Tom’s tenure at IBM, the x86 systems business grew from several hundred $M to a multi-$B business, and he received the IBM Chairman’s Award for new product category creation. Tom managed teams developing systems management software, the world wide VGA™ graphics and PCTV™ businesses, and embedded server virtualization. He and his team led IBM’s xArchitecture™ strategy, conceived the IBM BladeCenter™ which created the multi-billion dollar Converged Systems new product category, and conceived the IBM PureFlex™ / PureSystem™ systems.
Tom led cross company corporate strategies reporting to IBM’s CEO, on Virtualizations software, Home Networking, Product Usability, Data Center Networking, and Power™ Servers.
Tom was elected to the IBM Academy of Technolgy, and co-founded the IBM Personal Systems Institute, a management systems for rapid commercialization from IBM Research Labs to the market. Tom served as a lead technical advisor on legal agreements for the sale of the IBM PC business to Lenovo, and the IBM executive sponsor for the Financial Services industry and IBM Labs in India and China.
As an NI Fellow, Tom conceived and led NI’s big data strategy, Big Analog Data™ Solutions. He led teams developing end-to-end solutions for the IoT and Industrial Internet, pioneering the convergence of OT and IT. Tom conceived and led the NI corporate strategy for RASM (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability, and Manageability) for test, embedded control, and data acquisition products.
Tom is active in marketing and external messaging, creating and driving technical marketing events, and conceived the trademarks HPE Edgeline™ Systems, IBM xArchitecture™ Systems, IBM MXT™ Memory, and National Instruments Big Analog Data™ Solutions. He frequently consults with marketing and sales, and develops and delivers sales content and training.
With many customer collaboration successes, Tom incepted and led projects pioneering cloud computing, open source virtulization, Linux on x86, converged systems, and VDI. He co-founded seven industry standards, and served as a director or executive sponsor for industry trade associations such as:

Tom received the Telly Award for his video on IT infrastructure, the Intel Embedded Innovator Article Award, and the IEEE TestCon Best Paper Award. Regularly sought by the media, Tom has interviewed with major technical and business publications. He has delivered numerous keynotes for customer, investor and analyst events, IT trade associations, and industry and university conferences. Tom blogs and authors articles on business, sustainability, people management, and technology trends and directions.
Tom holds several U.S. patents in computer architecture and converged systems design, and the BSEE, MSEE, and PhD degrees. He is a sought after keynote speaker and lecturer on leadership, business innovation, and technology trends, and has served on adjunct faculties at several universities.
Active in mentoring, Tom served as the executive sponsor for the IBM Women Inventors Network, is an advisor to WomenInCloud.com, and an executive sponsor for the HPE Young Employees Network.
Tom founded the charities Soc (sockrelief.com), helping the homeless, addicted, and children in need, and is HPE’s executive sponsor for the Salvation Army partnership.

Jason Mann is responsible for growing IoT revenue and providing global focus, strategic direction and alignment across the SAS IoT analytics portfolio. He oversees the research and development, product management and marketing, and execution of the sell-through strategy across the portfolio. “My job is to empower R&D teams to innovate and create the forward-looking solutions that enable customers to seize the opportunity inherent in IoT, solve specific business challenges and capitalize on the insights mined from the data,” said Mann. Prior to his current position, Mann served as Director of Product Management for Industry Solutions and the Internet of Things where he set the strategic IoT direction for SAS. He was also responsible for product management of the manufacturing and supply chain, retail, energy, and health and life sciences industry solutions. Prior to that, he served as Manufacturing Industry Strategist where he led the internal and external positioning of SAS’ distinctive competence and value to the manufacturing industry. Before joining SAS in 2003, Mann worked at Nortel Networks for 10 years where he led the multiyear design and implementation of global manufacturing operations and order management systems. Mann received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University.
Mac Devine has 30 years of experience at IBM. During his career, he has held a wide variety of technical and business leadership roles including Chief Architect for mainframe software, Lead Solutions Architect for Networking Services, Director for Linux Development, Chief Strategy Office for IBM Cloud and currently is the VP and CTO for the Cloud Native Center of Competency for Watson Cloud Division. Mac is an accomplished speaker and author on a wide variety of topics but is most noted for his expertise in Cloud Computing and the Internet of Things. In 2006, Mac gained the designation of IBM Master Inventor and in 2009 he was appointed to IBM’s prestigious Academy of Technology. In 2016, Mac gained IBM’s highest technical recognition with his appointment as IBM Fellow. Mac also serves as the IBM Executive for Clemson University and MIT.
Chris Sullivan is the Global Healthcare Practice Lead for Zebra Technologies. With an acute understanding of the needs of patients and their caregivers coupled with robust technical knowledge of healthcare operations, Chris balances the personal and professional needs of the industry to create an inspirational point of view on healthcare technology. Mirko Graebel joined Cisco in 2008 and went through the Cisco Sales Associates Program (CSAP). Afterwards he joined the Customer Proof of Concept (CPOC) lab in London where he build Enterprise and Service Provider Networks with a focus on Routing & Switching and Compute. During his time in CPOC he also got his CCIE in Routing and Switching. After 4 years in CPOC he joined the Enterprise Routing Business Unit in San Jose as Technical Marketing Engineer (TME). He first became the lead TME for the ISR800 series and later on worked more on the ISR4k and the UCS E-Series compute modules. In 2018 Mirko joined the Internet of Things (IoT) Software Team as TME Manager, running various different industrial product lines including Routing, Network Management, Security and Edge Compute.
