IoT Day Slam 2020 Panel: Managing the hidden imperatives of IoT: Software and Application Quality, Teamwork, and Legal Compliance


An emerging trend that providers of IoT applications are experiencing is the accelerated planning for and deployment of “Critical IoT Services” in many verticals (including Automotive, Healthcare, Facilities Management, Financial Services, Logistics, Manufacturing, Smart Cities, Transportation, as well as Utilities among others.) This in turn has implications for the robustness and reliability of IoT solutions and the underlying IoT infrastructure. Here several additional factors are important: the increased virtualization and softwarization of functionality and the extensive use of open source software; the involvement of multiple parties in delivery of end-end solutions relying on new business models where collaboration and teamwork cross internal and external organizational lines; and finally increased legislative and regulatory attention focused on the roles and responsibilities of providers in a highly competitive yet collaborative setting and governance for meeting expectation of solution attributes, such as security, privacy, and reliability. The Panel discussions will concentrate on three aspects that are a priority: (1) Meeting the challenge of providing high quality software for infrastructure functionality, control, and management; (2) the metrics for collaboration and teamwork in development, deployment, and operation of IoT solutions – and incentives for improvement; and (3) understanding of and compliance with the legal, regulatory, and standards, or best practices regimes.

Dr. Adam T. Drobot is a technologist with over forty years of experience in industry, the public sector, and in research. Today his activities include strategic consulting, start-ups, and participation in industry associations and government advisory bodies. He is the Chairman of the Board of OpenTechWorks, Inc. a company specializing in open source software. Previously he was the Managing Director and CTO of 2M Companies in Dallas, TX, from 2010-2012, and President of the Applied Research and Government Business Units at Telcordia Technologies and the company’s CTO from 2002 to 2010. Prior to that, Adam managed the Advanced Technology Group at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). He also served as the Senior Vice President for Science and Technology as part of his 27 years of service at SAIC from 1975 to 2002.
He has published more than 100 journal articles, and is a frequent contributor to industry literature. He currently holds 26 patents. Adam is a member of Several Corporate Boards, and the FCC Technology Advisory Council. He is on the Board of the Telecommunications Industry Association where he has Chaired the TIA Technology Committee. He is the 2007 recipient of IEEE’s Managerial Excellence Award. For the IEEE he has Chaired IEEE Employee Benefits and Compensation Committee, the IEEE Awards Recognition Council, served as a member of the IEEE Awards Board. During 2017 and 2018 he chaired the IEEE IoT Activities Board that oversees the multi-society IEEE IoT Initiative. He holds a BS in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and a PhD. in Plasma Physics from the University of Texas.

David Tennenhouse leads the research & innovation activities that are accelerating and extending VMware’s technology leadership. He also represents VMware’s technology strategy to government customers worldwide. David has a track record of driving innovation in multiple domains. He has worked in academia, as a faculty member at MIT; in government, at DARPA; in industry at Intel, Amazon/ and Microsoft; and as a partner in a venture capital firm. Dr. Tennenhouse has been involved in the strategic planning and execution of programs related to a wide range of technologies, including distributed/cloud computing, blockchain, networking, computer architecture, storage, wireless communications, machine learning, search/advertising, IoT, robotics, MEMs, healthcare, and nano/bio-technology. David holds a BASc and MASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto and obtained his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the ACM, a Fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the FCC’s Technological Advisory Council.

Martin M. Zoltick is a shareholder with Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, P.C. in Washington, DC. He has been practicing in the field of technology law for more than 30 years. His practice is focused primarily on IP matters, transactions, and privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity. Mr. Zoltick is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the United States (CIPP/US) and works with his clients to help them understand and navigate the rapidly evolving area of privacy and data protection law. He is working with clients to prepare, integrate, and implement best practices for CCPA, other state’s laws, and GDPR compliance. With his technical background and expertise, he is uniquely positioned to work with IT and technical teams to understand potential exposure and minimize the risks of a breach. Mr. Zoltick is currently providing thought leadership on the application of data protection laws and industry/technology-specific data privacy and security considerations for IoT devices, biometric data, and in outer space. Mr. Zoltick is a registered patent attorney, and a substantial part of his practice involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications and, along with that, developing with his clients IP strategic plans designed to maximize value and satisfy both legal and business objectives. Mr. Zoltick also has significant experience handling contested cases and disputes on behalf of his clients. He regularly serves as trial counsel in major patent disputes in the U.S. federal district courts and as lead counsel in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Patent Trial and Appeal Board.Mr. Zoltick represents a wide range of U.S.-based and international clients, including independent inventors, entrepreneurs, emerging businesses, middle market and mature companies, as well as investors and venture capitalists.

Dr. Bryan R. Moser is Academic Director of System Design & Management (SDM) at MIT, and a Senior Lecturer in both Engineering and the Sloan School of Management. He is also a Project Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, where he directs the Global Teamwork Lab (GTL).  Prior to returning to MIT in 2014, he worked for 25 years in industry; as a research engineer at the Basic Science Lab (A.I.) of Nissan Motor Company, as a Sr. Research Scientist at United Technologies Corporation, and as founder and President of Global Project Design, a firm pioneering software and methods for model-based project management. Moser focuses on engineering teamwork for complex systems problems and use of model-based methods to improve performance of diverse teams.   Moser received a bachelor’s in computer science and Engineering in 1987 and a Master of Science in Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. His doctorate in 2012 is from the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences.

Jennifer Maisel is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the United States (CIPP/US), and advises clients on data security policies and procedures for protecting trade secrets and sensitive and personal information in compliance with state and federal laws. Mrs. Maisel regularly counsels clients on contractual and technological measures to safeguard valuable business information provided over the Internet, addressing issues such as web scraping or data breaches. She has been selected to the Washington, DC Super Lawyers “Rising Star” list, and regularly writes and lectures on privacy law issues involving cutting edge technology such as artificial intelligence/machine learning.
