Session Abstract:
The energy sector’s Internet of Things (IoT) evolution has created a massive device and data interoperability problem that begs for a standard approach to security technologies. This keynote will underscore the catalyzing role of such standards, akin to how similar standards revolutionized the mobile and consumer electronics world creating one of the largest growth markets for hardware and services in history. We’ll emphasize the urgency of bridging the gap in Zero Trust-derived standards to fully harness IoT’s potential in the energy sector. Years ago, when faced with a similar interoperability problem, the telco industry created the Global Standard for Mobile (GSM) and its follow on standard, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). 3GPP was transformative, setting the benchmark for secure, interoperable mobile communications. This international cooperation between telecommunications organizations revolutionized the mobile industry, and its importance cannot be overstated. 3GPP brought global uniformity and broad consensus to complex technological landscapes, enabling interoperability, and facilitating the rapid, cost-effective deployment of new technologies. To harness renewables, distributed and flexible energy generation the rise of energy as a service, with grids transforming into networks, similar standards and industry-wide cooperation is a must. Throw in additional security needs that stem from the fact that energy networks are even more mission critical than telco networks and you have a pressing need for an industry collaboration across services, devices and nations. We’re pleased to announce that Bruce Otte, Chief Information Officer of JERA Americas, will join Intertrust’s CISO and VP of Product Management, Julian Durand as a special guest. With its mission to provide cutting-edge solutions to the world’s energy issues, JERA Americas, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based JERA, is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Julian and Bruce are veterans of these initiatives coming from the IT and telco industry with decades of experience at IBM, Nokia and Qualcomm, today committing their efforts to the digital energy revolution. Join us as we delve into how a mobile-telco style approach to IoT standardization can catalyze a sustainable transformation in the energy industry. This insightful session offers a unique opportunity to learn from industry leaders about the critical role of IoT in shaping the energy sector’s future.
Speaker:
Julian Durand is Intertrust’s vice president of product management and chief information security officer where he is responsible for owning the IoT product leading the PKI team and overseeing security practices for the company. He brings over 30 years of experience in bringing breakthrough products to market at a massive scale and is a named inventor in Digital Rights Management (DRM), Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual SIM technologies. Before joining Intertrust, Julian brought SaaS and PaaS products to market for construction telematics and real time cyber risk analysis at TeMeDa and CyberLucent respectively, taking both companies to profitability from initial seed funding startups. At Qualcomm Julian led product security; virtual SIM development; child tracking sold as Best Buy’s “Little Buddy”; and the company’s first efforts in IoT doubling revenue year on year for the first three years and catalyzing what is now a billion-dollar business. Prior to that, he was the technical lead for Nokia’s first music phone. Julian holds a B.Eng from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, an MBA from the University of Southern California (USC) and is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).
