Reducing Food Deserts with the Internet of Things

Session Abstract:

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors.

Over the years, IoT has evolved from simple computing and short range wireless communications to powerful data processing and the ability to monitor and control objects from long distances with minimal to no human intervention.

Leveraging IoT, we successfully implememted a solution to provide urban communities access to affordable and nutritious food in areas considered to be food deserts. This solution enables the community to grow their own supply of healthy food all while reducing water consumption (a water saving of 90%). Excess crop output was also donated to a local non-profit organization which was then distributed to other communutues in need.
